Rallies Planned at Former Nazi Camp Over Palestinian Symbols
The initiative, promoted online under the name “Keffiyehs in Buchenwald,” accuses the camp’s administration of spreading “Israeli propaganda” and offering “ideological support for the ongoing genocide in Palestine.” Organizers are urging participants to gather in April at the site near Weimar, coinciding with events marking the 81st anniversary of the camp’s liberation by US forces.
The campaign also challenges restrictions on the keffiyeh headscarf and other Palestinian symbols, as well as the decision to disinvite critics of Israel from events held at the memorial complex.
Responding to the planned protest, Rikola-Gunnar Luettgenau, spokesperson for the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation, denounced the campaign, calling it “a completely inappropriate instrumentalization of the commemoration of the victims of National Socialism for political purposes.”
He added that groups that “celebrating and glorifying” the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and deny Israel’s right to exist “have no place here.”
A 2025 court ruling in Germany affirmed that the memorial could bar entry to individuals wearing the keffiyeh, citing concerns that it could “endanger the sense of security of many Jews, especially at this site.”
