EU Urges Israel to Halt West Bank Land Registration Plan
At a midday press briefing, EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said the Israeli plan to launch a land registration process in Area C of the West Bank “constitutes a new escalation following recent measures already aimed at expanding Israeli control in Areas A and B.” He stressed that the move threatens the viability of the two-state solution. “We recall that annexation is illegal under international law. And we call on Israel to reverse this decision,” El Anouni added.
Reports indicate that on Sunday, the Israeli government approved a proposal to formally register Palestinian land in the West Bank as “state property,” marking the first time such a legal step has been applied in the territory under Israeli administration.
According to media accounts, the proposal was submitted by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, and Defense Minister Israel Katz. The measure reportedly involves reopening previously frozen land registration processes, annulling old Jordanian-era laws, and disclosing land records that had remained confidential for decades.
Palestinian authorities regard the steps as a precursor to formal annexation and a move toward de facto control over large portions of the territory, which they say would severely undermine the two-state solution framework endorsed by the United Nations.
