Sanders condemns Israel’s move to shut down humanitarian groups in Gaza

(MENAFN) U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders sharply criticized Israel’s decision to revoke the operating licenses of 37 humanitarian organizations in Gaza, describing the move as “cruel” and “inhumane.”

Writing on X, Sanders said: “Countless innocent people rely on these services amid the ongoing crisis there. This is yet another cruel, inhumane step from the extremist Israeli government.”

Israel began canceling the licenses on January 4, arguing that the groups failed to comply with new registration requirements. The decision impacts several major international charities, including Oxfam, Save the Children, and Doctors Without Borders.

Doctors Without Borders accused Israel of deliberately obstructing humanitarian work in Gaza and the West Bank, warning that threats to deny registration to medical and aid organizations violate international humanitarian law.

This is not the first time Israel has taken such steps. It previously banned UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, from operating within its territory.

The ban comes against the backdrop of devastating violence in Gaza. Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have killed more than 71,000 people—most of them women and children—and injured over 170,000, according to official figures.
