UN General Assembly assures Palestinians right to self-determination

(MENAFN) The UN General Assembly on Monday overwhelmingly endorsed a draft resolution reaffirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, including the pursuit of an independent State of Palestine, according to reports.

The resolution received broad support, with 164 member states voting in favor. Eight countries opposed it—Israel, the United States, Micronesia, Argentina, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and Nauru—while nine nations abstained, including Ecuador, Togo, Tonga, Panama, Fiji, Cameroon, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, and South Sudan.

Under the agenda item concerning the right of peoples to self-determination, the resolution reiterated long-standing UN positions affirming Palestinians’ entitlement to freely determine their political status and advance their economic, social, and cultural development.

The document recalled relevant UN resolutions and international legal instruments, including the UN Charter and international human rights covenants, emphasizing that self-determination is a core principle of international law.

It also called on all states, UN agencies, and organizations within the UN system to continue supporting the Palestinian people in the early realization of this right. The resolution further stressed the importance of respecting the territorial unity, contiguity, and integrity of the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, and reaffirmed backing for a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace grounded in international law and UN resolutions.
